On the 29th October, Reef-World held a Green Fins Coordinator training event for the Coastal and Marine Management Office or CMMO who are the authority responsible for Green Fins on a national level, to build the knowledge and ability of 10 of their staff as new Green Fins Coordinators.
The coordinator training event took place in Manila, Philippines, at their headquarters in the beautiful surroundings of the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife centre right next to the lagoon. These new Coordinators will be a huge boost and asset to the programme as well as the national government. They can be mobilised to the various areas where the project has already been implemented in 6 sites around the Philippines. What’s more, there are plans for two more in the following year. The primary role of the new Green Fins Coordinators will be to provide more assistance and help for the network of Green Fins members across the Philippines. They will do this by hosting awareness raising sessions as well as improving the current communication channels between the private and public sectors. The threats and problems in areas of marine tourism are varied and wide and so Green Fins needs to be able to tackle these from a variety of approaches. Here at Reef-World, we’re excited to have trained these new coordinators to do just that.

Green Fins awareness raising activities started in the Philippines in 2004 and the initiative was then officially launched in 2010. Green Fins Philippines is implemented by the Coastal and Marine Division under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) with support from NGOs including Batangas Community Divers, The El Nido Foundation and Marine Conservation Philippines.
